Tooth Extraction

When a Tooth Extraction May Be Recommended Before Teeth Straightening from Your General Dentist

Having a tooth extraction may not be something you think about much, but it could make sense in some cases. Having a full set of teeth can help you have a more attractive smile. You will also be able to chew more effectively. There are times when the dentist will advise an extraction. One of these times is before you begin a teeth-straightening treatment. Be aware of the factors that determine whether this will be necessary.

Tooth extraction: during, before, and after

When the general dentist decides that an extraction is necessary, the patient will come in for a separate appointment. To prepare, the patient can learn about the process and what to expect. The patient should also inform the dentist of any medical conditions they have. The dentist will make sure the patient is comfortable in the dental chair. Then, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. So, the patient feels no pain during the process.

The dentist may cut a small incision in the gum to remove bone around the tooth. The dentist will use a tool to extract the tooth and control any bleeding with a gauze pad. If necessary, the dentist will stitch the incision. After the procedure, the patient can take over-the-counter pain medication and should rest for the remainder of the day.

Recommended to reduce crowding

One of the biggest reasons why a patient has a tooth extraction before a teeth-straightening process is to make more room for the other teeth. Crowded teeth can be painful and uncomfortable. It can also be more difficult for teeth to shift and align properly when there is crowding. Taking out a tooth or more than one tooth can allow the dentist to straighten the teeth and correct bite dysfunctions.

When there is severe damage

If a tooth has significant cosmetic damage, there is no point in including it with the teeth straightening. This is especially true if other treatments such as crowns and veneers will not be able to restore the tooth. Severely cracked or fractured teeth can also become infected. The infection may spread throughout the mouth. It is wise to extract the tooth first before putting on braces or other devices.

When there is excessive decay

Before starting a teeth-straightening therapy, the patient will have a checkup with the dentist. If there are any cavities, the dentist will fill them so that the teeth are healthy before beginning the treatment. However, if a cavity is so large that neither a filling nor a root canal can successfully repair, tooth extraction is the right approach. This will stop the decay from spreading during the teeth-straightening treatment.

Be prepared for your visit to the dentist

Having tooth extraction should not be a surprise. Your dentist will inform you of whether this step is right for you and your health. If you plan on undergoing a teeth-straightening therapy, there is a chance that the dentist will consider extracting one or more of your teeth. Understand the reasons for this so you can be ready.
